VectoRotor

VectoRotor combines buoyant lift with dynamic lift in a revolutionary hybrid, rotary-wing aircraft.  The VectoRotor’s unique joined-rotor design (U.S. Patent No. 5,931,411) distinguishes it from other hybrid, rotary-wing designs.  The joined-rotor concept consists of two rotors – an upper rotor with drooped blades and a lower rotor with blades that are coned upward.  The resulting rotor configuration provides vertical thrust and direct lateral force control for precision hovering in a structurally efficient design.  While the joined-rotor concept may also have future applications as a non-hybrid VTOL aircraft, its most promising initial application is in the vertical, heavy-lift VectoRotor.  When compared to conventional helicopters in civil vertical, heavy-lift applications, the VectoRotor offers dramatic improvements.  These improvements would include:

·    Much lower fuel consumption and emissions due to the use of buoyant lift and tip-driven rotors
·    Reduced noise due to the low disc-loading and tip-speeds
·    Improved safety due to the buoyant lift
·    Improved hovering characteristics from the direct force control
·    Lower production and operating costs

The center-body, a large helium-filled cell, floats the unladen aircraft, thus conserving fuel for lifting cargo at lower cost.  The control cabin below will have a cargo hoist.  VectoRotor will fly at least up to 50 mph.  Payloads of six and twelve tons are planned, matching current helicopter logging capability.
